Agriculture is the main industry for trade and also for survival in Haiti. Subsistance farming makes up a huge percentage of jobs and business in the Pignon region. Farmers head out early in the morning into the mountains to plant, care for and harvest sugar cane, corn, mangos, plantains, cabbage, tomatoes and other agricultural products. Goats are also a source of income, as well as a food supply. Promise for Haiti owns and operates a 120 acre farmstead that currently houses a goat operation, mango drying facility and a few crops. Plans are underway to start a "farmer to farmer" program with Haitian and American farmers to teach agricultural skills, provide a mentor program and help farmers in Haiti improve crop production.
